WEST
DENNIS, MA -- For the opening day of the King of the Cape Wind Festival
and PWA Qualifier on Cape Cod, you could not have hoped for a better
day. With temperatures creeping into the 70's, no clouds in the sky,
and winds cranking in from the south west at around 15kts with higher
gusts, there was not a dry sailor on the beach. Most of the competitors
made it to West Dennis Beach for registration today for some last minute
dialing in of their moves for the pending competition. Impressing the
crowds on the beach watching all the action were many of the pros who
have registered for the competition this year. With Robby Swift, the
Frans brothers, and Jace Panebianco throwing moves like it was the finals
drew cheers and claps through out the day. New comers to the pro tour,
Nick Warmuth and Riley Coon, from the island of Maui and are barely
over 16 years of age, were pulling flackas out of their bag of tricks
and barely breaking a sweat. These young guns will be
a force on the tour as they develop their chops in competition.
In the
mix were about 100 spectators who were actively participating in the
WindFest Demo program where they got to sail the latest gear from manufacturers
and help with their buying decisions. With equipment on site from AHD,
GAASTRA, FIBERSPAR, BIC, NORTH, MISTRAL, NEIL PRYDE, STARBOARD, SAILWORKS,
FANATIC, WORLD SAILS, BIC, REALWIND, CHINOOK, DAKINE, and WINDSURFING
HAWAII, there were many options to choose from. Learn to windsurf clinics
were going on throughout the day and will continue through the weekend,
bring the sport of windsurfing to the masses. This weekend will also
feature the FREE Kids Camp, run by Nevin Sayre, ex-pro windsurfer of
many championships. Any kids out there who are under 16 years of age
are encouraged to show up at the beach around 9:00am and sign up for
this free kids clinic and learn to windsurf.
Tomorrow
starts the first day of competition, and hopes are high for another
repeat of the perfect conditions that blessed this event on the first
day. Stay tuned for more reports on the action as it unfolds by either
